Gone

Sarah Solovay, an emerging NYC based singer-songwriter-guitarist, was recently chosen to open for John Mayer (+Train) on his Battle Studies Tour. Her song “Hearts Collide” was selected by Nic Harcourt (KCRW)and CBS Records to be featured on the TV Show 90210 and on the 90210 Soundtrack. “Gone” won the Songwriter-Circle Award in NYC and was featured on the Rob Corddry show “Children’s Hospital” and NBC’s “Outlaw.” Her music was also chosen by Joe Dante (“Gremlins”) for his new movie “The Hole.”

Gaslight Anthem - Wherefore Art Thou, Elvis?

It’s been a long time since I’ve posted on here. Far too long! So I’m coming back with a wonderful song that I only discovered last night. I’ve been a massive Gaslight Anthem fan for about 2 years now, and have had their EP,  Senor and the Queen, as long as all their other albums, but never thought to actually give it a listen. What a stupid idea that was, because upon first listen I was hooked, just like with all their other material.

The sound is obviously a lot less polished, a lot more raw, than their full length albums, but those famous, anthem like choruses and verses are here in abundance. In my opinion, it’s a lot less focused on Brian Fallon’s vocals, letting the other instruments shine. That is not to say on their later releases they are just ‘Brian Fallon & band’.

I’ve chosen this song to post, because I adore the varying in instrument lines. Each instrument has it’s own time to shine, even including a very interesting bass line in the bridge.

Lotus Flower | Radiohead

Radiohead bring forward the release date of their new album The King of Limbs by a day and release the first video from the album.  Cue - Thom Yorke dancing.

Icky Thump (Live Under The Great Northern Lights) | The White Stripes

Today it was announced the White Stripes are splitting up following a 2 year hiatus in which Jack has pursued other musical projects, Dead Weather, Raconteurs and his Third Man Records label.  They ended their statement with:

“The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing this experience. Your involvement will never be lost on us and we are truly grateful.”

Lets hope Meg forms a great new band and Jack carries on with his obscure side projects.

Helplessness Blues | Fleet Foxes

This is the eyponymous track from Fleet Foxes follow up to their critically aclaimed debut album.  It is availbale to download for free on their website here.  Less swamped in reverb and with more emphasis on harmonies and the dynamics of the song.  I can’t wait to hear the rest of the album.

The new album Helplessness Blues is set for release on may 3rd.

L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N. | Noah & The Whale

L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N. is the lead single from NATW 3rd Album ‘Last Night on Earth’ it sees a move away from the band’s 2009 melancholic ‘break-up’ album ‘First Days of Spring’.  ‘Last Night on Earth’ is being touted as an album of story songs and if L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N. is anything to go by there will be some interesting stories.

The album is due March 7th.  You can learn more and hear another track ‘Wild Thing’ here.

Record Collection by Mark Ronson & the Business Intl.
I picked up this album (yes — I still buy music) today on the strength of its title track alone and it has not disappointed. Ronson is probably more well-known for his production and songwriting work in the U.S. (he co-wrote Amy Winehouse’s song “Back to Black”), but he’s come out with a couple of albums of his own (one being an alt-hip hop record and the other being a covers album) as well. Having not heard his previous music, I imagine that Record Collection is an intersection of those two previous ideas — catchy-as-hell pop music that has elements of hip-hop present while still appealing to those who do not follow the genre. With cameos from artists ranging from Ghostface Killah to Duran Duran, it’s certainly one of the most eclectic records of the year — and maybe one of the best as well.
