Lotus Flower | Radiohead
Radiohead bring forward the release date of their new album The King of Limbs by a day and release the first video from the album. Cue - Thom Yorke dancing.
“Nobody Does It Better” by Radiohead.
You would be excused for wondering why on earth Radiohead would be covering a Carly Simon track (not to mention one from the James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me), but…Radiohead did it anyway. The original is a bit of a light, somewhat cheesy song that belongs with the light, somewhat cheesy nature of Roger Moore’s Bond films, but this live performance by Radiohead almost makes the song a paean to a former lover, not to a current one. Thom Yorke throws some extra anguish into his voice to make it cut all the same, and you end up getting haunted by a song you never expected.
“By Some Miracle” by Philip Selway.
Even if the name Philip Selway doesn’t immediately strike a bell with you, you’ve heard his work countless times in your life. As the drummer for Radiohead, Selway has taken part in the creation of some of the most influential and recognisable music of our generation, and for many, this would be satisfying enough. But, Selway (who also has another side project in 7 Worlds Collide) has decided to branch out on his own, and will release a solo album entitled Familial.
“By Some Miracle” is the lead track from Familial, and is a free download from his website. The lo-fi, folksy nature of the song is not necessarily what we’d expect from Radiohead, and that’s why it’s great. I see the song as a bit of a palate cleanser — something you listen to to get something else out of your head — that is still able to stand alone as a good track regardless.
Familial will be released on 30 August on the Bella Union label.
